In an exhilarating opening match of the tennis tournament in Stuttgart, Dominik Koepfer, a Davis Cup player from the Black Forest region, managed to make it to the quarterfinals. The 30-year-old overcame the higher-ranked Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen with a score of 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (8:6). In an interesting turn of events, Koepfer had two match points against him during the third set tiebreak but managed to pull through.

Koepfer got off to a stronger start, leading by a break in the first set. However, Zhang Zhizhen, the world number 44 from China, upped his game. Koepfer then lost his serve twice consecutively and started to express his frustration. It seemed like it might not be Koepfer's day, but he managed to fight back.

Speaking about his experience of playing at home, the 1.80-meter tall tennis professional, said, "It's tricky to serve when you're a dwarf on tour." He is known for being an emotional player. "We try to squeeze out a little extra here at home," said Koepfer, whose family was present in the stands.

The match lasted for two hours and 36 minutes. Koepfer attributed the difficulty of winning the match to just a few key points in the two tiebreaks. He also pointed out that Zhang Zhizhen seemed to get a bit nervous.

Another player, Yannick Hanfmann, overcame his opponent, Henri Squire from Duisburg, in a much faster match. It took him just 62 minutes to win with a score of 6:3, 6:3. Hanfmann is now gearing up for a tough challenge against the American former champion, Frances Tiafoe.

This tournament, with a prize money of 812,235 euros, is considered a preparation event for the annual Grand Slam grass court classic in England (July 1-14). Alexander Zverev, the French Open finalist, is currently the top seed in the tournament schedule. It's likely that the German number one will begin his grass court season in Halle, Germany, next week.

Zverev, who lost the final to Carlos Alcaraz in Paris, had earlier stated that the chances of him playing in Stuttgart were similar to that of him winning the final again.

The Stuttgart runner-up from last year, Jan-Lennard Struff, is slated to start playing on Tuesday (not before 16:30) against the Italian Flavio Cobolli.
