Process - Knife attack: defendant apologizes
After the knife attack on two seven and eight-year-old girls in a school playground, the alleged perpetrator has confessed to the Berlin district court. The 39-year-old's defense lawyer explained at the beginning of the trial on Tuesday that he was extremely sorry and asked for an apology. His illness had been the trigger for the attack. The public prosecutor's office is seeking to have the accused placed in a psychiatric hospital in the trial for attempted manslaughter.
The German is said to have entered the grounds of an elementary school in Berlin-Neukölln on the afternoon of May 3 this year. He allegedly stabbed the two playing children one after the other with a kitchen knife, including in the neck area, with intent to kill. Both girls were seriously injured and were saved by emergency surgery. One schoolgirl's life was temporarily in danger.
The police arrested the 39-year-old near the scene of the crime. He had already said at the time that he had heard voices ordering him to carry out a knife attack. He is said not to have known the two victims. The defense lawyer further explained on behalf of her client that he was shocked that the crime had occurred. However, he could only remember fragments of what had actually happened. He was glad that the girls had survived. Since the crime, the man has been in what is known as a "Maßregelvollzug".
