Process - Knife attack at Berlin university: accused remains silent

A 36-year-old man is on trial at the Berlin district court for allegedly attacking and robbing a music student with a knife in a classroom. According to the indictment, the woman was sitting at the piano when the man grabbed her rucksack and demanded money. He stabbed her several times with a kitchen knife and struck her with his fist. The 35-year-old suffered five stab wounds during the attack in July of this year. At the start of the trial on Thursday, the defense lawyer explained that her client "did not want to make any statements at the moment".

In the case of the music student, the public prosecutor's office is accusing the accused, who has no trained profession and is said to have lived in a hostel at the time, of aggravated robbery and grievous bodily harm, among other things. He stole 70 euros. The 36-year-old must also answer for a robbery of a woman at a ticket machine in June 2022. He is said to have snatched a wallet containing 200 euros from the victim.

The music student was the first witness to say that she was in a classroom at the University of the Arts in Berlin-Wilmersdorf when the man she did not know appeared. "He had a knife, made threatening gestures and said something incomprehensible at first." The man then grabbed her rucksack. "It stays here," she said. "Then he hit her with his fist, again and again." He also bit her and stabbed her in the thigh and arm. In her opinion, the attacker was under the influence of drugs.

The 36-year-old was reportedly seen again two weeks later on the university grounds. He was arrested shortly afterwards. He has been in custody since then. The trial will continue on December 12.
