Klingbeil advises DB board members to waive bonuses

Deutsche Bahn is failing to meet its punctuality and customer satisfaction targets. Nevertheless, the board members do not have to worry about their bonus payments in the millions. This is causing massive criticism. SPD Secretary General Klingbeil recommends that the management take action.

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil has recommended that the board members of Deutsche Bahn (DB) forgo controversial bonus payments in the millions. "Even if everything is clearly regulated in contracts and criteria are now being met, those responsible at Deutsche Bahn have to ask themselves whether this is the right signal," Klingbeil said on RTL Direkt. "We are in times where it is very difficult for a hell of a lot of people."

When asked whether waiving the bonuses was necessary, the SPD leader said: "It would be a signal where at least everyone in the population says: we understand that. And we can also see that in times when we are fighting for every penny for the railroad, it is also the responsibility of the management to say: We'll do without such a payment now."

NDR, WDR and "Süddeutsche Zeitung" had reported on Monday that Deutsche Bahn can pay its board members bonuses in the millions for 2022 despite missing targets, especially in terms of punctuality and customer satisfaction. According to the report, bonuses totaling five million euros are planned in addition to the basic salary of around four million euros for the nine members of the Executive Board in 2022.

According to the report, the bonuses are based on the fact that overachieved targets - such as the number of women in management positions and CO2 savings - are weighted more heavily when calculating the bonuses. The resulting bonuses have attracted criticism.

In light of Deutsche Bahn's persisting issues with punctuality and customer satisfaction, the criticism of generous bonus payments for the German railroad's board members has grown even more prominent. Despite missing key targets, these bonus payments, potentially reaching millions of euros, are still a possibility for DB's executive board members in 2022.
