Winter sports - Klepsch: Winter sports remain an important factor for tourism

Thanks to an early onset of winter, Saxony's winter sports regions are starting the new season early this year. The conditions are currently excellent, stated Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) at the opening ceremony in Altenberg on Friday. Despite man-made climate change, Klepsch still sees winter sports as an important factor for tourism in the Free State. The local winter sports regions attract thousands of guests from near and far every year, she emphasized. Altenberg, as the largest winter sports center in the Eastern Ore Mountains, offers other activities such as health vacations in addition to sporting activities.

In addition to the abundant snowfall, the ski resorts have been making snow by machine for days in order to prepare the slopes for the start of the season. In Altenberg, skiers will be able to get their money's worth this weekend, while Saxony's largest alpine ski resort on the Fichtelberg will kick off the new ski season on St. Nicholas Day on Wednesday. The aim is to be open until Easter, Oberwiesenthal's mayor Jens Benedict (non-party) told the German Press Agency.

In addition to downhill runs for snowboarders and skiers, many places in the Erzgebirge and Vogtland also offer tours for cross-country skiers and winter hikers. In the Altenberg region, for example, there are four lifts and an ice rink as well as 80 kilometers of cross-country ski trails and winter hiking paths. Holidaymakers can also take a ride on the snow groomer, according to Mayor Markus Wiesenberg(CDU). Numerous cross-country ski runs and hiking trails around the Fichtelberg have also been groomed this weekend. The new season opens on the Kammloipe in the Erzgebirge and Vogtland on Saturday.
