Media usage - Kitas should teach children in dealing with digital media

Brandenburgan kindergartens should in the future accompany Children more in dealing with digital media. Digital media should be shown to children as tools to explore the world, according to the new kindergarten education plan presented by the Education Ministry. In this plan, principles for the education of kindergarten children are compiled. Kindergartens in the country should orient themselves towards these principles.

Children should be prepared to use self-chosen tools responsibly to receive and share information. In communicating through media and creating their own content, they should be supported. The plan states, among other things, "Make media a topic in conversations, games, projects and parent evenings!" In addition, one should talk to children and caregivers about preferences and fears, about smartphone use, advertising and online games.

The topic of healthy media usage behavior should not be missing. Children should develop a sense of how to move in the net. "Can anyone do whatever they want on the net? Or is there a regulator, laws or an internet prison? When is a password safe?" These are questions that should be discussed with the children.

  1. The Brandenburg Education Ministry, located in Potsdam, has proposed a new kindergarten education plan that emphasizes the usage of digital media for children's exploration of the world.
  2. The BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) strongly supports this initiative, encouraging kindergartens across Brandenburg to incorporate media usage into their teachings and activities.
  3. Handy-usage, or smartphone usage, is an essential part of this plan, and kindergartens are encouraged to have open discussions with children about responsible usage, including understanding online safety, ads, and online games.
  4. To implement this plan effectively, media should be integrated into various activities, such as conversations, games, projects, and parent evenings, in Brandenburg's kindergartens.
  5. In Potsdam's kindergartens, for example, media usage will facilitate opportunities for children's education, helping them develop critical thinking skills and learn about appropriate digital behavior within a safe environment.
