Sailing under the sign of Paris - Kieler Woche: Buhl still second - Olympic team nominated
The first half of the 130th Kiel Week has come to an end with pre-Olympic peak performances. Ilca-7-sailor Philipp Buhl, who started as the fourth in the medal race, moved up to the podium on a Wednesday. Buhl finished second in the final, securing his place as the overall runner-up.
Buhl's international training group, consisting of Jean-Baptiste Bernaz from France, the 2022 World Champion, and Norwegian Hermann Tomasgaard, occupied the podium together. Bernaz won the event, while Tomasgaard finished third. "I'm happy with my solid performance in the final. Our training group made it to the top three. We had a break in Marseille, where it can be stressful and hot. We had fun – it was a good week," Buhl said five weeks before the Olympic regatta in Marseille.
In the other four out of a total of only five Olympic classes races held during the Kiel Week, only German crews made it to the podium in the Women's Skiff 49erFX: Inga-Marie Hofmann/Jill Paland (Duesseldorfer Yacht-Club/Norddeutscher Regatta Verein) and Katharina Schwachhofer/Elena Stoltze (Wuertembergischer Yacht-Club) finished first and third, respectively.
Olympic Sailors' Meeting
The fifth day of the Kiel Week was all about Olympics on land: The sailing team held a farewell meeting for those heading to Marseille. At the same time, the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) announced eleven athletes and athletes for the Games in eight out of ten Olympic sailing disciplines. Buhl is one of them. The only German crew with a bronze medal from the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, the Nacra17 sailors Paul Kohlhoff/Alica Stuhlemmer, are also among them.
Two more crews are still waiting for a decision on a nomination application. DOSB President Thomas Weikert said, "We won three medals in sailing last time. I won't put anyone under pressure, but maybe that's the goal again."
