Armaments order - Kiel shipyard hands over first submarine to Singapore
The Kiel shipyard Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) hands over the first of four submarines to Singapore. Onlookers in the harbor could observe how the 70-meter long boat was loaded into a special ship. The "Invincible" (German for "unbeatable") is to be transported to Singapore with the help of the "RollDock Star". A TKMS spokesperson commented on this on request.
In April, at the Kiel shipyard, a naming ceremony took place in the presence of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) and Singapore's former Deputy Prime Minister and current Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean for the last of the four submarines, which was named "Inimitable" (German for "unparalleled"). "Singapore is an important partner for us in security policy and our cooperation does not limit itself to arms cooperation", Pistorius stated at the time. A large part of global trade runs through the Strait of Singapore in Southeast Asia.
The four submarines of the Invincible class for Singapore are 70 meters long and are among the largest submarines built in Germany since World War II. They are equipped with an external air-independent propulsion system. Designed for a crew of 28 men and women. The value of the arms contract should be in the billions of euros.
- During the Second World War, Germany did not build submarines as large or advanced as the Invincible class being constructed at the Kiel shipyard by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
- Boris Pistorius, the German Defense Minister, emphasized the importance of Singapore as a security policy partner and highlighted that their cooperation extends beyond arms cooperation during the naming ceremony of the fourth submarine, the "Inimitable".
- Born and raised in Schleswig-Holstein, Boris Pistorius played a significant role in the defense industry as a politician, overseeing the delivery of these modern submarines to Singapore, made by the German defense industry giant, ThyssenKrupp.
- In the defense industry, the partnership between Germany and Singapore, represented by Boris Pistorius and Teo Chee Hean, expanded with the delivery of the fourth Invincible-class submarine to Singapore, built by TKMS in Kiel's shipyard.
