Kiel power plant chimney to be blown up
The last visible relic of the old Kiel coal-fired power plant is now to disappear. The demolition of the 134-metre-high chimney is planned for Friday, as announced by the Managing Director of the joint power plant in Kiel, Matthias Brock, on Monday. The structure on the eastern shore, which can be seen from afar, is to fall between 1.30 pm and 2.30 pm. The safety radius for the demolition is reportedly 200 meters. The immediate neighbors are to be notified with flyers.
In July, only the third blast succeeded in destroying the power plant's boiler house to such an extent that the rubble could be cleared away. There had already been a mishap during a blast in April. Back then, a piece of metal about the size of a plate hit a house around 1.1 kilometers away from the power plant. No one was injured.
The coal-fired power plant stopped producing electricity and heat in spring 2019 after almost 50 years. It was replaced by the modern coastal power plant, in which 20 gas engines can be controlled according to demand.
The Demolition of the Kiel power plant's chimney will require an extensive amount of energy due to its height. To ensure safe shipping during the demolition, the shipping lanes around the area will be temporarily closed.
