German football league - Kiel handball team experiences worst loss this season.
Handball powerhouse THW Kiel has experienced a humiliating away loss. In a brutal 29:40 (10:21) matchup against VfL Gummersbach on Sunday, Kiel faced their heaviest defeat this season.
Despite the loss, THW stays fourth in the rankings with a total of 44:20 points. The Icelandic striker Einar Arason played a stellar game and made the most goals with eight. Lukas Blohm and Kristjan Horzen each scored six times for VfL, delighting the 4,132 fans in a sold-out Schwalbe Arena.
Post-game, Kiel's defender Harald Reinkind expresses his disappointment on the Dyn live streaming platform. "Today was humiliating. That's unacceptable," he stated, referring to the numerous errors his team made.
The game started with a scoreline of 2:3 in favor of Kiel but quickly went downhill. Gummersbach seized control, leading 10:4 (10th) and 16:6 (18th) before stretching to 21:8 (26th). THW struggled to keep up; errors, poor shots, and unfortunate luck plagued the seasoned team. A free throw by Georgian pro Giorgi Tskhovrebadze sailed between Kiel's guardian Tomas Mrkva's legs for a 25:13 (37') lead. THW made little progress after that.
