Handball - Kiel handball players celebrate away win over ThSV Eisenach
THW Kiel has at least temporarily moved up to fourth place in the German Handball League. The record champions won 40:32 (22:19) at ThSV Eisenach on Friday. In front of 3150 spectators in the sold-out Werner-Aßmann-Halle, Niclas Ekberg was the best scorer for Kiel, who now have 24:10 points with seven goals. Willy Weyhrauch scored six times for the newly promoted team from Thuringia, who remain second last with 9:25 points.
Left winger Rune Dahmke gave THW its first four-goal lead with his goal to make it 8:4 (9th minute). The hosts from Wartburg tried to disrupt Kiel's flow of play with their usual very offensive defense. The North Germans responded with a seventh outfield player, but repeatedly conceded goals into the goal, which was then deserted.
After a strong start to the second period, Switzerland's Manuel Zehnder tied the scores again for Eisenach at 22:22 (35'). ThSV was also still within striking distance at 25:26 (40'). However, Kiel then struck mercilessly. With seven goals in a row to make it 32:25 (47'), the defending champions ensured a preliminary decision.
