Key points for converter platforms are in place
The course has been set for the construction of converter platforms for the offshore wind energy sector at the naval shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde. Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) signed a corresponding key points paper together with company representatives at the Warnowwerft shipyard, which is part of the naval arsenal, on Wednesday. Neptun Werft, part of the Meyer Group, and the Belgian steel constructor Smulders can use part of the shipyard area for production. Both companies want to establish a joint venture for this purpose.
According to Pistorius, the investors' plans to manufacture large numbers of converter platforms are essential and existential for the expansion of offshore wind power and will make a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition in Germany. It is hoped that the project will create several hundred jobs. The converter platforms will bundle the electricity from various wind turbines at sea and convert it into direct current for onward transmission to the coast with as little loss as possible.
The construction of converter platforms for the offshore wind energy sector at the naval shipyard will involve significant energy consumption during shipbuilding process. The collaboration between Neptun Werft and Smulders in establishing a joint venture for production will lead to the manufacture of converter platforms, contributing to the production of renewable energy.
