Comedian Hape Kerkeling (58) joked at the Scharfrichterhaus in Passau about his appearance at the first award ceremony for the ScharfrichterBeil in 1983. He was a substitute on the list of candidates at the time and his story about his guinea pig and his aunt did not immediately cause a stir. It may have been funny, but it wasn't socio-politically relevant, said Scharfrichterhaus co-founder Walter Landshuter. And joked with a laugh: "It was 40 years ago. The best thing is: I'm still alive."
Walter Landshuter remembers not believing Hape Kerkeling - 18 years old at the time - was capable of much. "We were battle-hardened here against the CSU and the church - and then we're sitting there with the little boy." But: he was the most talented and immediately had the audience under control.
The ScharfrichterBeil is one of the most prestigious awards for up-and-coming cabaret artists in the German-speaking world. For the 40th award ceremony, the first winner Kerkeling - now a comedy legend - returned to Lower Bavaria and took his place on the jury. Six candidates competed on Wednesday evening. The winner was expected to be announced late in the evening.
