Kenya initiates investigation into lethal police shooting of demonstrator
Guy named as Rex Masai by officials was at a protest against a debatable finance law passing through parliament, and was claimed to have been shot with real bullets by a police officer.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) announced on Friday that they have "recorded the death of Mr. Rex Masai, allegedly caused by police shooting, and several severe injuries sustained by other protesters, including police officers."
CNN team members witnessed protesters being gassed with tear gas by police on Thursday, leading to a journalist getting injured from a gas canister. Earlier in the week, multiple arrests were made in Nairobi, with more than 200 individuals being detained by police, as per civil society groups.
The IPOA statement from this morning stated, "Our investigation team has since made contact with the family of Mr. Masai, and investigations into the fatal shooting have commenced."
IPOA requested "continued restraint from the police" and encouraged the public "to remain peaceful and abide by the law."
