Bundestag - Katrin Budde ends political career

Former SPD state chairwoman and long-standing representative in the state parliament and federal parliament, Katrin Budde, is retiring from politics. "I will not run again in the 2025 federal election," the 59-year-old told the "Mitteldeutsche Zeitung." I will have been an active representative for 35 years by the next year, with successful tenures even in difficult times." It's time to stop, she added. She continued: "I will continue to be politically active in a voluntary capacity. I am looking forward to more self-determined time."

Budde became a member of the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990 after studying at the Technical University of Magdeburg. She remained an MP there until 2017, serving as faction leader for over ten years. From 2009 to 2016, the Magdeburg native and mother of two children was chairwoman of the SPD in Sachsen-Anhalt. Since 2017, Budde has been a member of the German Bundestag, serving as chair of the Committee on Culture and Media.

At the beginning of this week, the Halle SPD Bundestag MP Karamba Diaby announced that he would not be running for office in the upcoming election. After three legislative periods, it's time for new paths and to make room for the next political generation, said the 62-year-old.
