Katja Ebstein unmasked at "The Masked Singer"

Singer and actress Katja Ebstein has been revealed as the first celebrity contestant in the new season of the ProSieben show "The Masked Singer". "It was a sweaty affair," said the 78-year-old on Saturday evening. However, the costume was also a true work of art. The 1980 Grand Prix runner-up and two-time third-place winner in 1970 and 1971 had sung the song "Iko Iko (My Bestie)" by Justin Wellington and Small Jam as a glittering okapi.

In the end, Ebstein received the fewest votes from viewers in the music show and had to remove the okapi head. It was the opening show of the ninth season, which had a few innovations in store. Unlike in previous years, this time all the costumes were only presented in the first live show. There was also a change in the guessing team. Presenter Ruth Moschner, who regularly demonstrates her good ear for celebrity voices on the show, is now joined by singer Alvaro Soler as a permanent member. Journalist and actor Jenke von Wilmsdorff was a guest at the start of the season.

Ebstein as the preferred candidate

Even though Moschner had often mentioned Katja Ebstein as a preferred candidate for the show in the past, she was unable to find her now. Instead, she suspected the singer Amanda Lear in the Okapi's colorful patterned dress. Soler and von Wilmsdorff settled on the actress and singer Elke Sommer. She should have known, Moschner was annoyed afterwards. "The beautiful, slender legs."

In the show, celebrities appear as singers but conceal their identity behind elaborate costumes. They only take off their masks if they either receive too few votes or win the season at the end. In the new edition, the contestants include a bright red fire extinguisher, an ice princess and a bearded character called Klaus Claus, who was introduced as the "half-brother of Santa Claus".

This time, the second edition will take place on a Sunday evening instead of a Saturday evening, on November 26. On Saturday, November 25, Thomas Gottschalk will host "Wetten, dass...?" for the last time.

  1. The colorful patterned dress of the Okapi costume, which Katja Ebstein wore on "The Masked Singer," led some viewers to suspect singer Amanda Lear.
  2. Katja Ebstein, who had previously been mentioned as a preferred candidate by presenter Ruth Moschner, performed "Iko Iko (My Bestie)" by Justin Wellington and Small Jam under the mask during the music show.
  3. The ProSieben show "The Masked Singer" featured a variety of celebrity contestants, including Katja Ebstein as an okapi, singing popular music to hide their identities from the audience.
