Anfang was most recently in charge of Dynamo Dresden, a third-division club, but the two parties separated ways in April after a disappointing second half of the season. Funkel had helped Kaiserslautern avoid relegation to the third league in his brief 14-week spell and led them to the DFB Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, which they lost 0:1. Following the match, Funkel and Kaiserslautern terminated their contract.

Anfang has grabbed headlines across Germany due to a forged vaccination card. Subsequently, the Bremen District Court imposed a fine of 36,000 euros on the 49-year-old coach. Additionally, the German Football Association's sports court temporarily barred him from working.
