Justice ministers want to take action against stalking via trackers
The justice ministers of the federal states want to discuss measures against secret surveillance using Bluetooth trackers and tracking devices. Bavaria and Hamburg have submitted a joint proposal to this end, which the ministers will discuss at their fall conference in Berlin this Friday. They are of the opinion that criminal law has so far offered insufficient protection against the misuse of coin-sized devices. These mini devices can help to locate lost suitcases or stolen cars. Secretly placed in a jacket, however, they can also be used by stalkers to track down their victim.
"The idea of being able to be tracked down at any time, for example by an ex-partner, can have serious psychological and physical consequences for those affected, said Bavaria's Minister of Justice, Georg Eisenreich (CSU). "For consistent victim protection, we urgently need to tighten up the criminal law here," demanded Hamburg Senator for Justice Anna Gallina (Greens).
The Federal Government should consider enacting stricter regulations on the use of Bluetooth trackers and other locator devices, considering their potential misuse for stalking. Implementing such measures across the various federal states would contribute significantly to securing online privacy and justice.
