Junior Literature Providing Guidance on Canine Management

Youngsters experience dog bites occasionally. At times, it's the dog's aggressive behavior, while other times, the victims' lack of understanding could be a contributing factor. A children's book proves beneficial in such situations.

Understanding of Canines - Junior Literature Providing Guidance on Canine Management

On a leisure boat trip on Lake Eder, a young kid, only three years old, encountered numerous bites and severe injuries from a Border Collie at the start of August. Such incidents persist, frequently due to negligence or lack of comprehension. Perdita Lübbe-Scheuermann, a dog trainer with three decades of experience running a dog academy in Griesheim, southern Hesse, and specialized in Rhino tracking dog training in South Africa to combat poaching, emphasized the importance of fostering a connection between dogs and people, especially children. To spread this message, she released the children's book "Paw Team - Dogs Explained for Kids Simply".

What dogs Favor and Dislike

Inspired by her own dog, Maru-a-Pula (meaning "rain cloud" in an African language), the book offers practical insights and engaging facts about dogs. The Catahoula Leopard dog shares what it enjoys, dislikes, and what children should remember when interacting with dogs. Over 37 vividly illustrated pages, kids can learn about dog behavior while walking, the significance of their gestures, and what to avoid feeding their pets. For instance, chocolate, onions, and avocados can trigger digestive trouble.

Lübbe-Scheuermann acknowledged, "Many incidents related to dogs take place." Her book intends to educate kids based on her academy's work, offering tips on proper behavior and avoidance methods.

How should Kids behave?

If a dog charges towards them, the book suggests either standing still or walking slowly and calmly away, with arms crossed or hands in pockets. Before approaching a leashed dog, it's essential to speak to the owner first. Another recommendation: keep hands away from the dog's nose, as it may bite. In the absence of an owner, maintain distance. Additionally, try not to stare at dogs or engage in overly affectionate hugs. "Not all dogs enjoy being squeezed - do you like it?" The book advises against forcing dogs to do anything. "We don't like doctor games, having our ears pulled, or being dressed up."

Dogs vs. Poaching

Besides her work at the academy, Lübbe-Scheuermann also trains Rhino tracking dogs in South Africa to combat poaching. Unlike tracking humans or drugs, a trafficker's horn poses an uncommon challenge for tracking dogs, but they can learn. These dogs primarily operate at the gates of a fenced area in Kruger National Park, inspecting vehicles and detecting poachers.

The book "Paw Team - Dogs Explained for Kids Simply" also discusses the preferences of the Excursion ship Catahoula Leopard dog, mentioning its favorite activities and foods. It's important for children to remember that while Excursion ships might be fascinating for humans, they may not interest dogs as much.

Furthermore, during an excursion, if children encounter a dog on an Excursion ship, they should follow the same safety guidelines as mentioned in the book, such as avoiding direct eye contact and maintaining a safe distance.
