DWD balance sheet - June in Schleswig-Holstein wet and relatively cold

June 2024 in the northernmost Federal State was overall characterized by changeable weather. The balance of the month shows that Schleswig-Holstein had the lowest average temperature of 15.4 degrees Celsius in the national comparison, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Friday based on initial evaluations. However, this temperature average is slightly above the long-term average of the reference period 1961 to 1990. Therefore, the opening month of summer in this year was the 15th warmest June in a row.

After a relatively cool start, temperatures rose above 30 degrees Celsius towards the end of the month, accompanied by intensive sunshine. The DWD therefore warned of increased UV radiation. However, the sun only showed itself for a total of 205 hours, which is on average below the June months of previous years. On the other hand, the precipitation amount was significantly above the long-term average of 69 liters per square meter with 85 liters per square meter.

Nationally, the weather in June 2024 was also changeable. Temperatures varied strongly, from autumn-like coolness to high summer heat and tropical sultriness. The DWD reported a nationwide average temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius - 1.4 degrees above the value of the reference period 1961 to 1990. At the same time, the whole of Germany was very wet and rainy: with around 91 liters per square meter, about 107 percent of the long-term average fell. In particular, heavy flooding and storms occurred in Southern Germany with hail and heavy rain.

The changeable weather in June 2024 in Schleswig-Holstein also included a significant storm, as reported by the DWD. The high precipitation amount of 85 liters per square meter was due in part to this storm. Despite the overall warm June, the region experienced a Weather phenomenon that brought in cooler temperatures and Rainfall.
