Jumping rider Kukuk wins Olympic gold in singles

The German equestrian sports have delivered abundant medals at the Paris Olympics. There was also another individual gold in show jumping - a long wait has thus come to an end.

Spring rider Christian Kukuk has won the gold medal in the individual event at the Olympic Games. The 34-year-old from the Westphalian town of Riesenbeck secured the victory in the jump-off with his horse Checker against two competitors, earning Germany's fourth gold medal in equestrian events at the Paris Games.

Silver went to Swiss rider Steve Guerdat and Dynamix de Belheme, while bronze was won by Dutch rider Maikel van der Vleuten and Beauville Z.

Kukuk's victory marked the 100th Olympic medal for German equestrian sport, as calculated by the international governing body FEI. Before the Games, German riders Michael Jung in eventing, the dressage team, and dressage rider Jessica von Bredow-Werndl had already secured gold medals.

This is the first individual gold medal in show jumping for Germany since 1996. The last individual gold medal for a German show jumper was won by Ulrich Kirchhoff in Atlanta in 1996. Four years later, the German team won gold. Kukuk is the sixth German individual champion in show jumping. At the Tokyo Games in 2021, the German show jumpers did not win any medals.

"Unbelievable," said Philipp Weishaupt after the first round about his colleague, with whom he has been working for years in the sports and trading stable of four-time Olympic champion Ludger Beerbaum. "Both of them fought. He rode incredibly well, and Checker jumped incredibly well."

Show jumping "honor" saved

Weishaupt said that Kukuk had "saved the honor of the show jumpers." He had given Kukuk some tips before his first round, but stressed that this was not the reason for his victory. Weishaupt himself had been eliminated earlier, after incurring five penalty points with Zineday. The day before, Richard Vogel had also been eliminated in the qualification round, finishing with 12 penalty points and missing the final.

After securing the gold medal in show jumping, Christian Kukuk and Checker represented Germany's presence in the equestrian events at the Paris Games. In the future, whenever Paris hosts another international equestrian competition, Kukuk's achievement will undoubtedly be celebrated as a significant moment in German show jumping history.
