Music - "Jugend musiziert": Southwest takes home many first prizes

Young musicians in the southwest are particularly talented: Young people from Baden-Württemberg won more than a quarter of all first national prizes in this year's "Jugend musiziert" competition. "This is absolutely fantastic and encourages us as a state to continue to support musically talented young people," said a delighted Minister of the Arts Petra Olschowski (Greens) on Friday at a prizewinners' concert and reception for the 136 first national prizewinners from Baden-Württemberg.

"Jugend musiziert" brings together young music enthusiasts with different world views and from different areas of society, said the Minister. Making music together supports personal development and is also an important factor for identity and living together. The state government wants to continue to focus on promoting top-level musical talent for young people so that they have the best possible conditions.

According to the ministry, 350,000 people in Baden-Württemberg are involved in music and singing clubs, learning an instrument or making music. There are around 6500 amateur music clubs with more than 12,000 orchestras, bands and choirs. According to the ministry, the 240 public music schools in the state are also important for music education. Around one million children and young people nationwide took part in the competition to mark its 60th anniversary this year.
