Prosecutors are pushing for the most severe penalty of 20 years in prison for cases like this and have the backing of several victim relatives who have joined as co-plaintiffs. However, the two defendants are hoping for a reduction in their harsh sentences.

In 2016, on the anniversary of the French national holiday on July 14th, a 31-year-old Tunisian named Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove a massive 19-ton truck into a crowd of people, killing 86 individuals, including three women from Berlin.
