State Constitutional Court - Judge for state constitutional court - candidates named

At the long-awaited filling of the judge positions at the Berlin Constitutional Court, a solution is emerging. According to dpa information, six judges, including the new vice president, are expected to be elected at the Land Parliament on Thursday.

Then the parliamentarians come together for their last regular plenary session before the summer break. The parliamentary group leaders of CDU, SPD, Greens, and The Left have agreed on the candidates, as it was consistently reported from the parliamentary groups.

Candidates will present themselves to the factions

According to dpa information, the candidates include lawyer Lucy Chebout, Judge Juliane Pätzold from the Administrative Court Berlin, labor and social law expert Florian Rödl from the Free University Berlin, Civil Judge Florian Schärdel from the Amtsgericht Schöneberg, and Judge Rosanna Sieveking from the Federal Administrative Court. Vice President of the Berlin Constitutional Court is expected to be the 53-year-old jurist Björn Retzlaff, who is the President Judge at the Berlin Court of Appeals.

The candidates will present themselves to the factions in the afternoon at the Land Parliament. A two-thirds majority is necessary for the election. The filling of the judge positions is considered overdue.

Discussions between the factions have been ongoing for months

Discussions between the four factions have been ongoing for several months, but they could not reach an agreement. The common goal was to come to an understanding before the summer break. The Left and the Greens in the Land Parliament had already demanded in a letter in January that progress be made on this issue because the situation was no longer bearable.

A part of the overall nine judges has been in an acting capacity for a long time because their seven-year term has expired. Two positions are vacant.

According to media reports, the CDU faction had problems with the Greens' proposal for filling one of the positions. There were reportedly significant objections to the proposed candidate. The Greens then withdrew their proposal and submitted a new one.

The upcoming elections for judges in the House of Representatives will include the position of vice president at the Berlin Constitutional Court. These elections are expected to take place at the State Constitutional Court.

The CDU and SPD, along with the Greens and The Left, have agreed on the candidates for these judicial positions. One of the candidates, Björn Retzlaff, is currently the President Judge at the Berlin Court of Appeals, and he is expected to become the new vice president.

The discussions between the factions about filling these positions have been ongoing for months, with the Left and the Greens expressing their concerns about the situation being unbearable due to the expired seven-year terms of some judges.

The CDU had reportedly faced issues with the Greens' proposal for filling one of the vacant positions. Significant objections were raised against the proposed candidate, leading the Greens to withdraw their proposal and submit a new one.
