Soccer - Joint project: clubs want to combat hate speech online
The professional soccer clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia want to take more decisive action against hate speech on the internet. Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, VfL Bochum, 1. FC Köln, Fortuna Düsseldorf, SC Paderborn and FC Schalke 04 have joined forces with the Central and Contact Point Cybercrime North Rhine-Westphalia (ZAC NRW) to form the project "Who incites, loses!". "This special alliance has the power to tackle online hate speech and prosecute it consistently," said project coordinator Jonas Schlevogt, who is also VfL Bochum's legal advisor.
From now on, the clubs' social media teams will be trained to distinguish between hate speech on social media and pure expression of opinion and to report it to the police. This should be possible quickly and unbureaucratically via an online tool. "The system is modern, efficient and effective at the same time. I am particularly pleased that the initiative came from the clubs. Hate online is a problem for society as a whole and clubs and prosecutors are facing up to this challenge together," said the head of the ZAC NRW, Senior Public Prosecutor Markus Hartmann.
