Joint motion for the closure of the IZH

In a joint motion in the Hamburg Parliament on Wednesday, several parliamentary groups called for the rapid closure of the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH), which has been monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution for decades. A ban on the IZH is reportedly the responsibility of the Federal Ministry of the Interior in accordance with the law on associations. In the motion passed by the SPD, Green and CDU parliamentary groups as well as the two FDP members of parliament, the Senate is asked to continue to lobby the Federal Ministry to close the center. The Left and AfD are also calling for its closure.

"There is still no evidence that the regime of the current Islamic Republic of Iran has concretely and operationally supported this cowardly attack by Hamas. However, it is clear that the Islamist Hamas would not have been able to carry out this terrorist attack without years of support from the Islamic Republic of Iran," the motion states.

The Islamic Center, which runs the Blue Mosque on the Alster, has been monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution since 1993. "We have only just enforced the observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in court again," said Hamburg's Senator of the Interior Andy Grote (SPD) during the debate. It had been classified as an Islamist, extremist organization. There was "clear control by Tehran." Last year, the Interior Ministry had expelled the IZH deputy. "The IZH also knows that we are exhausting all possibilities to take action against it in Hamburg, which is why it is very quiet in the current situation."

Despite the ongoing monitoring of the Islamic Center Hamburg by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, concerns about its alleged extremist ties to Iran have led several parliamentary groups to call for its citizenship status to be reevaluated in light of its alleged support for extremist groups. Furthermore, the motion highlights the need for a thorough investigation into the center's adherence to democratic values and the promotion of religious extremism within its community.
