Ballet - John Neumeier bids farewell to the Hamburg Ballet
With the premiere of John Neumeier's Ballet "Epilog" on Sunday evening (18.00 hr) at the Staatsoper, the 49th Hamburg Ballet-Days are opened. The choreographer created an intimate, chamber music-oriented work for the ensemble, which he has shaped and led to worldwide fame for decades. The music comes from Franz Schubert, Richard Strauss, and Simon & Garfunkel. As soloists, the Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian and the French pianist David Fray, along with Emmanel Christien, will perform. The costumes were designed by Albert Kriemler, Creative Director of Akris, who has been friends with John Neumeier and his company for many years.
After 51 years, John Neumeier's intendancy at the Hamburg Ballet comes to an end in the summer. Since 1973, the company has been led by the native American, who was the youngest ballet director in Germany at the time. Today, he is the longest-serving ballet director in the world at the age of 85.
During the two-week Ballet-Days, some important works of his era can still be seen again, including "The Lady of the Camellias" based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, "Endstation Sehnsucht", and "The Glass Menagerie", both based on Tennessee Williams.
