Jewish community: We don't feel left alone

The commemoration of the Nazi pogrom night against the Jews 85 years ago comes at a time when Israel is waging war against the terrorist organization Hamas. A double burden for Jews in Germany too.

Jewish community: We don't feel left alone

The chairman of the Jewish community in Rostock, Yuri Rosov, has emphasized the wave of solidarity in Germany since the Hamas attack on Israel around a month ago. There have been many offers of help and support from politicians, the police and society. "The wave is quite big and noticeable for us. That is important for us. We don't feel left alone," Rosov told the German Press Agency.

However, the commemoration of the pogrom night is different this year and the mood in the Jewish community is not good. "I see this every day and also sense that many members of the community are worried and afraid." Some parents did not want their children to talk publicly about their affiliation to Judaism. "They are really afraid for their children. It's always difficult to say how justified these fears are."

At the same time, school classes that wanted to visit the Jewish community also cancel. "Teachers write to us saying they have to cancel because the parents are afraid." It's not just Jewish parents who are worried. For the same reason, there have also been some resignations from the Jewish sports club Makkabi.

At the same time, Rosov reported on the strong bond between Jews and Israel, which is currently very evident. "I'm not so much referring to the state, but first and foremost to the people of Israel. Many of our relatives and friends live in the land of Israel. Our thoughts are with them these days." The Jewish community in Rostock has around 520 members.

The attacks on the night of the pogrom occurred in Rostock primarily on November 10, 1938. The community will also meet next Friday (November 10) for a prayer of mourning at the Jewish cemetery in Lindenpark and then go to the site of the old synagogue. On Thursday (November 9), the mono-opera "The Diary of Anne Frank" will be performed in the evening in a popular theater premiere in the Jewish community.

Despite the solidarity shown towards the Jewish community in Germany following recent conflicts, memorials for past tragedies such as the pogrom night hold a different significance this year. Fear and anxiety are palpable within the community, with some parents keeping their children's Jewish affiliation private due to concern for their safety. Additionally, school visits and club memberships have been impacted by these concerns.
