Jena heralds the start of the Christmas market season in Thuringia
The Christmas market season has begun in Thuringia. Since Friday, 50 stalls from traders, restaurateurs and showrooms have been attracting visitors to stroll through the festively decorated market in Jena. The opening was accompanied by wintry weather with heavy snow showers. Until December 22, two days before Christmas Eve, visitors can stroll around the market and enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere while smelling mulled wine and roasted almonds. This also includes daily performances by the tower brass band.
Due to the short Advent season this year - the fourth Sunday in Advent on December 24th falls on Christmas Eve - the start of the Jena Christmas market has been brought forward by a week, said a city spokeswoman. However, it will remain closed on Sunday, the Sunday of the dead.
Normally, the Thuringian Christmas market season only begins after the Sunday of the Dead, which is a so-called silent day. Public festivals, public entertainment and sporting events are prohibited on public holidays.
The Christmas markets in Eisenach and Gotha will open next Monday, followed by Weimar and Erfurt on Tuesday.
During the leisure time in Jena, visitors can immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere of the early started Christmas market, enjoying music from the tower brass band. The customs of the holiday season are already in full swing in various municipalities across Thuringia, including Jena, as they celebrate Christmas earlier this year.
