Soccer - Jahn win emotional third league match after death of Diawusie

In the first match after the death of professional footballer Agyemang Diawusie, SSV Jahn Regensburg achieved an emotional victory. The third division leaders prevailed 3:2 (2:1) against bottom club SC Freiburg II on Sunday evening. The home side had initially taken a 2-0 lead, but then conceded an equalizer in the second half. Noah Ganaus made sure of the win in the 77th minute.

Although Jahn extended their lead over Dynamo Dresden in the table to six points with their tenth league win in a row, sport was not the main focus of the game. "We're delighted to have won the game. But today the result was secondary," said Jahn captain Andreas Geipl on MagentaSport.

The thoughts of the people in the stadium were with Diawusie. According to the club, he had died during the week at the age of just 25 "of a sudden cardiac death, presumably triggered by a viral infection with suspected myocarditis".

Before kick-off, the Jahn players, coaches and support staff gathered in the center circle for a minute's silence. Many players had tears in their eyes. The fans in the curve unveiled a banner reading "Rest in peace Agy" and next to it a jersey with Diawusie's number 24.

When 24 minutes had been played, the spectators stood up and applauded in memory of the attacking player. There were also chants of "Agy Agy Agy". "That was an extraordinary game, an extraordinary situation that you wouldn't wish on anyone," said Geipl.

Elias Huth scored a penalty (34 minutes) and shortly afterwards Dominik Kother (36 minutes) had put Regensburg ahead. The visitors equalized thanks to goals from Berkay Yilmaz (40') and Patrick Lienhard (58'). Substitute Ganaus then ensured victory for the hosts.
