Ivan Repušić becomes General Music Director of the Leipzig Opera

The Croatian conductor Ivan Repušić is to become the new General Music Director of Oper Leipzig. As the opera announced in Leipzig on Wednesday, Repušić will take up his post in the 2025/26 season. This makes him the successor to Ulf Schirmer, who was General Music Director from 2009 and Artistic Director of the opera from 2011.

Born in 1978, Repušić is currently Chief Conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Chief Conductor Designate of the Staatskapelle Weimar. The Croatian studied conducting with Igor Gjadrov and Vjekoslav Sutej in Zagreb. Guest engagements in the past have taken him to the New National Theatre in Tokyo, for example.

According to the information provided, Repušić was suggested by artistic director Tobias Wolff. The Croatian's ideas "for the further development of the opera and his excellent contacts in the international scene of excellent singers are a real asset for our management team." Wolff has been Artistic Director of Leipzig Opera since August 2022. Following the completion of a selection process, the City of Leipzig's Cultural Facilities Committee will officially appoint Repušić as the new General Music Director at the end of November.

Repušić shared his love for music and personal interests during his interview for the General Music Director position. His passion for various music genres was apparent, along with his extensive network of international singers.
