- It's still hot in North Rhine-Westphalia, forecast for another storm
After a period of heat and hot nights, residents of North Rhine-Westphalia can expect more sultry weather with thunderstorms in the coming days, but at least some relief from the heat. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), showers and potentially heavy thunderstorms are forecast throughout the day.
In some parts of the state, heavy rain of 15 to 25 liters per square meter in a short time is expected, along with hail and gusty winds. Locally, there may be severe thunderstorms with heavy rain of up to 40 to 50 liters per square meter and wind gusts up to 80 km/h. High temperatures will range from 25°C west of the Rhine to 28°C in East Westphalia. Overnight, temperatures will drop to 12 to 19°C, and the thunderstorms will subside.
Thursday is expected to be sunny and dry, with temperatures between 25 and 29°C, and 21 to 24°C in the mountains. Overnight temperatures will range from 13 to 18°C. According to DWD, Friday will be mostly sunny with temperatures between 24 and 29°C, and 23°C in the highlands. Rain is possible in the northwest in the afternoon. Overnight temperatures will drop to 14 to 18°C.
Tuesday's preliminary data from DWD showed a record temperature of over 36°C, challenging the state's previous record of 35.4°C. In Ennigerloh-Ostenfelde in the district of Warendorf, 36.2°C was recorded.
Despite the relief from the heat in the coming days, the German Weather Service warns of a potential Hurricane-force storm approaching North Rhine-Westphalia, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. If this Hurricane materializes, it could surpass the previous heat records set this week.
