Italy's ultra-right ruling party leading in European polls after the election.
Meloni's coalition partners, the right-wing League of Vice-Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and the conservative Forza Italia of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, earned 7% to 12% of the votes. The success of Meloni, who served as her party's leading candidate, wasn't surprising following the Fratelli d'Italia's impressive performance in October 2022's parliamentary elections. During that time, the Fratelli d'Italia obtained 26% of the votes.
The right-wing landscape in Italy has undergone significant shifts since the last European election. In 2019, the League won 34.3% of the votes, while Fratelli d'Italia obtained a mere 6.44%. In Rome, over the weekend, Meloni spoke to supporters, expressing her ambition to form a right-wing government in Europe and permanently place the left in opposition.
The Fratelli d'Italia is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament. Also belonging to this group are the Spanish Vox and the right-nationalist Polish former government party PiS.
