Israeli army continues attacks on Hamas throughout Gaza Strip
On Friday morning, a seven-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas expired, which had been used for the release of Hamas hostages and aid deliveries for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
Clouds of gray smoke rose over the Gaza Strip due to the renewed shelling. According to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, which cannot be independently verified, 240 people have been killed since the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip. A further 650 people have been injured in the Israeli attacks. The army had particularly targeted the city of Chan Junis in the south of the coastal area. There, "dozens of houses and their inhabitants were destroyed".
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli soldiers also carried out several operations in the occupied West Bank early on Saturday morning.
Israel and Hamas are blaming each other for the fact that the ceasefire has not been extended. According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the United States, Egypt and Qatar are working to broker a renewed ceasefire.
On October 7, hundreds of Hamas fighters invaded Israel and committed atrocities, mainly against civilians. According to Israeli reports, around 1,200 people were killed in Israel and around 240 people were taken hostage.
In response, Israel massively bombed targets in the Gaza Strip from the air and on the ground for weeks. According to Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, more than 15,000 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory since then, including more than 6,000 children and young people.
Following the resumption of fighting, alarm sirens were heard in Israeli areas near the Gaza Strip. In one town, a rocket hit a van.
The UN Children's Fund expressed alarm at the new fighting. "Today, Gaza is once again the most dangerous place in the world for children," said Unicef head Catherine Russell on Saturday. She warned that "hundreds more children could be killed and injured" every day as a result of the fighting.
During the ceasefire, 80 hostages abducted from Israel were released, including a total of 14 German dual nationals. In return, 240 Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli jails. Hamas also released 23 Thais, one Filipino and one Russian-Israeli dual national outside the agreement with Israel. Five hostages had already been released before the ceasefire.
According to the latest information from the Israeli army, seven other hostages were killed. 136 hostages, including 17 women and children, are still being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
