- Islamic State (IS) has shared a video featuring individuals believed to be responsible for the incident in Solingen.
ISIS, the extremist group, released a video two days following the fatal stabbing incident** in Solingen, allegedly featuring the perpetrator. In the roughly one-minute clip, a masked individual with a youthful appearance is captured holding a large knife towards the camera. He swears loyalty to the ISIS leader in Arabic, referring to him as "Emir." ISIS had previously taken responsibility for the attack, which led to three fatalities, on Saturday.
Through their online propaganda, ISIS declared receiving videos from the Solingen stabbing attacker's source. The authenticity and timing of the video, as well as the man depicted in it, were initially questionable.
The masked man in the video introduces himself as Samarkand A., which could be a pseudonym, and claims to hail from Dair as-Saur in eastern Syria, an area known for ongoing ISIS cell activities and attacks.
The 26-year-old Syrian suspected of conducting the Solingen attack surrendered on Saturday evening and is now in custody. The Federal Prosecutor's Office alleges his affiliation with ISIS, driven by his radical Islamic beliefs, he decided to attack as many "non-believers" as possible at the Solingen city festival. The name associated with him by investigators contrasts with that in the video.
The man in the ISIS video justifies his attack as retaliation for the murder of Muslims in Syria, Iraq, and Bosnia. Addressing his parents, he expresses his vengeance for the "people in Palestine" who suffer massacres with the help of "Zionists" - a reference to the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Islamic Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
According to some analysts, the specter of terrorism and radicalization in the Islamic world has heightened due to the protracted conflict in Gaza. Germany, a significant ally of Israel, alongside the USA, and also one of the leading arms suppliers, finds itself in a critical position in this escalating situation.
The Commission has expressed concern over the justification given in the ISIS video for the Solingen attack, citing it as a potential escalation of radicalization worldwide. The Commission has also requested further investigation into the authenticity of the video and the connection between the man in the video and the suspected attacker.
