- ISIS terrorist suspect charged with murder is on trial

An alleged IS terrorist is accused of involvement in a murder and war crimes in Iraq. From this Thursday (09:30 AM) onwards, the 33-year-old, who last resided in Wuppertal, will be seated in the dock of the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office alleges that he joined the terrorist group "Islamic State" (IS) after their invasion of the Iraqi city of Al Qaim in June 2014 and participated in brutal public punishment actions carried out by IS. It is claimed that death sentences passed by an IS Sharia court against at least six prisoners were carried out.

The defendant is said to have escorted one of the prisoners to the execution site, supervised the proceedings, and given the signal for the prisoners' beheading by firing a shot from his pistol into the air. In another case, he is alleged to have supervised the amputation of a hand of a suspected thief while armed with a pistol. IS is said to have imposed and carried out these punishments without proper judicial proceedings.

Furthermore, the defendant is accused of having arrested and tortured a person in Al Qaim in 2014, together with other IS fighters, in order to extract information. The Iraqi was arrested on October 11, 2023, and has been in custody since then. Nineteen trial days have been scheduled until the end of November.

The alleged terrorist is currently facing charges for his involvement in the murder of at least six prisoners as per death sentences handed down by an IS Sharia court. During his time with IS, he is also accused of supervising the amputation of a suspect's hand without proper judicial proceedings.
