Parliament - Is Midyatli standing for election as SPD parliamentary group leader?
Following the resignation of its chairman Thomas Losse-Müller, the SPD parliamentary group in the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament must elect a new leader. Since Losse-Müller's announcement last week, none of the eleven other parliamentary party members have openly thrown their hats into the ring.
It is considered likely that the state chairwoman Serpil Midyatli will stand for election. She had already led the parliamentary group until the 2022 state elections. However, Midyatli had to make way for the failed top candidate Losse-Müller after the party's disastrous performance.
The SPD achieved its worst result ever with 16% and did not win a single constituency. With twelve MPs, it is now only the third largest parliamentary group in the state parliament. The 50-year-old former banker, State Secretary and Head of the State Chancellery Losse-Müller also wants to give up his seat in the state parliament in April and move to the Climate Neutrality Foundation as Managing Director.
Not much was heard from the party and parliamentary group after Losse-Müller announced his resignation. Nobody dared to come out of hiding. Midyatli could now benefit from her re-election as deputy national chairwoman at the party conference in Berlin last weekend.
The former state and parliamentary group leader of the SPD, Ralf Stegner, had warned immediately after Losse-Müller's announcement that it was not about speed in the succession. It was about the quality of the decision.
Stegner said that the parliamentary group must build on Losse-Müller's intellectual and conceptual strength. At the same time, an emotional social democratic orientation was needed. Midyatli had reacted soberly to the resignation. "As much as I regret his personal decision to resign from the parliamentary group chairmanship and give up his mandate, this also shows his great sense of responsibility for the country and the party."
