- "Is it necessary?" Deplorable crusade against unsanitary highway restroom facilities.

Everyone who's had to use a highway restroom knows the struggle: restrooms at rest areas can be downright dirty. The Autobahn GmbH in Baden-Württemberg is tackling this problem head-on with a bold poster campaign. "Piles of poo on the walls and dirty floors, I consider that a bodily attack on my staff," stated Christine Baur-Fewson, director of the Southwest branch of the Autobahn GmbH. For her colleagues, cleaning up this mess isn't just gross but also harmful to their health.

The posters aim to promote cleanliness and respect. They start with the question "Does it have to be like this?" and feature an actual photo of a grime-filled restroom, complete with feces on the floor, a dirty toilet bowl, and towering piles of used toilet paper. These posters will initially be displayed at all highway restrooms in the Stuttgart area. If they prove successful, they will be expanded across the entire Southwest branch, covering most of Baden-Württemberg and parts of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.

As per the Autobahn GmbH, restrooms along the highways are cleaned three times a day but quickly get dirty again. "The carelessness of a few individuals costs taxpayers a lot of money. Annual restroom cleaning expenses in the Southwest amount to three million euros," Baur-Fewson explained.

The Autobahn GmbH believes that changing the behavior of some individuals is key to improving the condition of highway restrooms. The Community needs to understand the impact of their actions on the cleanliness of these facilities and the health of the cleaners.
