Volkswagen is currently grappling with an existential dilemma.

Is it aligned with Christian values, Mr. Wagner, the substantial income earned by the highest-ranking executives?

Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Schmidt sees the company's financial situation as troubling and has announced he'll boost cost-reduction efforts at the flagship VW brand. He's now considering closing a German plant and implementing staff reductions due to operational reasons.

Pastor and industrial chaplain Dirk Weber is present at VW's Wolfsburg facility to support employees as a counselor.

Is there no other help for VW staff in these times apart from God?

God is available to everyone. "Call upon me in your time of need, and I will save you," Bible verses claim. This message carries significance. God has the power to present new viewpoints. Some may even discover progress through prayer. However, many VW employees might not find this approach straightforward.

In what capacity do you serve as an industrial chaplain at VW, Dirk?

My primary focus is establishing a positive work environment. Individual coaching is also part of my role. Public events where I invite speakers to share knowledge and stimulate discussion are also part of my duties. Encouraging collaborative thought on life and work summarizes it well.

Did you receive a surge of calls from VW employees this week following the negative news?

Demand for my services hasn't skyrocketed, but I've had some conversations. There's certainly no excitement in such a situation. Employees are filled with fear and uncertainty: What's next? Will I retain my job? This anxiety especially impacts those who are relatively new to VW and have ongoing financial obligations, such as a young man who recently purchased a house and amassed debts, who can naturally experience existential fears triggered by ongoing discussions.**

Which VW employees approach you?

Diverse groups. From mechanics to managers, anyone who needs support can seek me out.

What's the general mood among the staff?

I've spoken to two experienced plant workers who have weathered the diesel scandal, the international financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic at VW - they remain optimistic that solidarity-based solutions will be found now. The company has always viewed itself as more than just an automotive corporation, but as the "VW family." Generally, people come to me with a variety of problems. There are employees struggling to make ends meet, workers who aren't satisfied with their jobs, and supervisors delivering difficult news while unsure of how to do so.**

How can you assist these individuals?

My main job is listening. Creating spaces for people to share their concerns should help them self-discover solutions.

In these particularly challenging days?

I advise VW employees to focus on tangible resources and consider how to remain financially secure without losing perspective. Possibly, dampening the panic just a bit would be beneficial. I'm here with everything I can offer: initially and foremost, my ear, and encouragement. That's what the church is for - an agent of hope.

Does this help alleviate their concerns?

I do what I can. I'm not equipped with an answer for every situation.

Do you have a perfect solution for Volkswagen's current struggles?

No. That's a decision for the relevant authorities, including the collective bargaining representatives. I can only provide my listening ear and one-on-one support if requested. My ultimate goal is to ensure that plant workers are satisfied with their jobs, which fosters renewed motivation. VW must get back on the right track; otherwise, frustration will persist.

What type of individuals comprise VW's workforce in Wolfsburg?

It's not due to shared hairstyles. Employees at VW in Wolfsburg are like a mini-city - diverse in terms of personality and sentiment. Some workers display little enthusiasm, questioning their motivation at age 40. Conversely, many are highly committed and are working diligently to further develop and improve VW. Kudos to them.

What is the advantage of your position as an outsider in the VW universe?

My outsider status proves beneficial because I'm not tied to the company's culture. As a result, I can sometimes provide unique perspectives.

Has Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Schmidt requested a meeting with you?

Not yet. Oliver Schmidt has numerous responsibilities to manage. However, I'd be interested in meeting with him, but only when the time is right.

Is it ethical for top VW managers to earn substantial salaries?

This isn't a question of ethics, but rather responsibility. Those in high-ranking positions should earn a fair income.

What does Volkswagen offer its employees?

A permanent position with VW feels like winning the lottery. Volkswagen offers its employees an excellent employment package: top-notch social benefits, strong salaries - they often surpass those of civil servants.

What thoughts occupy the chaplain's own mind?

Retirement. I'm approaching 65, and next year marks the beginning of my retirement. The challenge of shaping my post-work life has captured my attention. I'd like to maintain my connections with industrial chaplaincy in some capacity. I'm still working out how. But I must also invest more time in myself and create opportunities to experience life's joys with my wife.**

Noah Kohn spoke with Dirk Wagner

The economic instability at Volkswagen is causing significant concern for its employees, leading to fear about job security and financial stability. Despite these challenges, God can offer comfort and potential solutions through prayer and faith.

The economy, specifically Volkswagen's financial situation, is a major concern for CEO Oliver Schmidt and has led to consideration of cost-reduction measures, such as closing a plant and implementing staff reductions.
