Iris Berben misses an outcry against anti-Semitism

In view of the recent increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, actress Iris Berben finds it "inconceivable" that the outcry in the country is not much greater. In the new Disney+ series "Deutsches Haus" (starting November 15), Berben plays a Holocaust survivor who testifies in a trial against Nazi perpetrators in the 1960s. "Deutsches Haus" deals with the West German reappraisal of the mass murder of the Jews.

"We have been surprised in a very painful way by how topical this series is now," said the 73-year-old in an interview with the German Press Agency. "The silence, which is particularly loud, particularly noticeable in our country, can only motivate us all to say: there can't be enough of us talking, of us speaking up."

Beyond all the discussions that are currently being held politically: "It's about humanity, it's about our humanity, our empathy. And when we think about the fact that people in our country today have to be afraid that they will be put on display by Stars of David and swastikas in their closest surroundings. I find it so incredible that this outcry in this country is not much greater."

The media has been widely covering the increasing anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, making it apparent that the silence in response is unusual. Iris Berben's portrayal of a Holocaust survivor in the upcoming Disney+ series "Deutsches Haus" highlights the significance of television as a platform to address historical conflicts and promote understanding. People's apathy towards addressing anti-Semitism in the country remains a concerning aspect of recent history.
