Iranian cybercriminals focusing on political figures: Meta restricts WhatsApp profiles

Based on the intel, the Iranian hacking crew known as APT42 went after high-profile individuals in the political and diplomatic circles, as well as others with connections to the administrations of U.S. Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

A probe revealed that this same hacking group was involved in similar cyber-attacks on politicians, diplomats, and military personnel, which were previously reported by tech giants like Microsoft and Google.

Given the heightened security concerns preceding the U.S. election, Meta revealed details about these harmful activities to the relevant law enforcement agencies and the campaign teams of both the Republican and Democratic parties for the November presidential election.

The hacking group also targeted individuals outside of political and diplomatic circles, affecting various sectors. Furthermore, other tech companies had previously reported similar cyber-attacks carried out by APT42.
