- Iran expresses intent to shut down additional German establishments.
Iran's judicial system hints at more actions against German establishments in the ongoing argument over the prohibition of the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH). As a direct reaction, the Iranian judicial system shut down the German Language Institute (DSIT) in the heart of Tehran three weeks ago. Subsequent information came in regarding "misconducts by other German government institutions," mentioned judicial spokesperson Asghar Djafari. "Decisions will be made public soon."
Germany's Federal Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser (SPD), prohibited the IZH towards the end of July, labeling it as a "major Iranian propaganda tool in Europe." Across the nation, the police confiscated properties and facilities belonging to the center and five associated affiliate organizations. The IZH's leader, Mohammed Hadi Mofatteh, has been ordered to leave Germany by September 11. His departure could instigate another corresponding response from Tehran.
There have been recurring diplomatic standoffs between Tehran and Berlin in recent years. Several German citizens, some of whom carry dual German-Iranian passports, are currently detained in Iran. At the beginning of 2023, German-Iranian Djamshid Sharmahd was sentenced to death on charges of terrorism.
The German actions against the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) have reportedly led to concerns within The Commission, as they perceive it as interfering with Iran's sovereignty. In response to these concerns, The Commission has threatened to take further retaliatory measures against German establishments in Iran.
