Investigation proceedings against CDU parliamentary group leader dropped
The public prosecutor's office in Erfurt has closed an investigation against the Thuringian CDU party and parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt. The suspicion of bribery was not confirmed, the investigating authority announced in Erfurt on Monday.
Since 2022, the public prosecutor's office had been investigating the question of whether Voigt had exerted undue influence during the 2019 European election campaign to secure a contract from the European People's Party (EPP) for a company based in Jena. Voigt, who wants to stand as the CDU's lead candidate in the 2024 state elections, has always denied this. The CDU politician wants to make a statement this morning.
The closure of the investigation is a relief for Voigt, as it allows him to focus on his campaign for the 2024 state elections with the CDU. Despite the dropped charges, the controversy surrounding his personal details and involvement in parties during the 2019 election campaign may still require him to address justice-related matters in his public statement.
