- Investigation into the fire in Verden continues
Following a major fire at a historic building near the Verden Cathedral, investigations are ongoing. Due to the building's instability, police used a drone to capture photos of the scene. The cause of the fire remains unknown, a spokesperson confirmed, and all possibilities are being explored. "Whether there's a connection to renovation work is part of the ongoing investigation," they added.
In Wednesday's fire, a 65-year-old man sustained severe injuries, while two others suffered minor injuries. The estimated property damage could be in the millions, according to police. The building, which housed a guesthouse and residential units, was largely destroyed by the fire.
Built in 1670, the house bears an inscription from that year. An adjacent residence is also currently uninhabitable due to the fire. The blaze led to significant traffic disruptions and closures in the city center. Firefighters were deployed in large numbers to extinguish the flames and hotspots.
The police are working closely with the fire department to investigate the cause of the fire and any potential links to the ongoing renovation work. The police have estimated the property damage from the fire to be in the millions of dollars.
