Church - Investigation into Dillinger abuse case so far unsuccessful

The Saarbrücken public prosecutor's office has not yet achieved any results in its investigation into the case of the Catholic priest Edmund Dillinger, who was suspected of abuse and died at the end of 2022. The aim of the investigation against unknown persons is to find witnesses who can provide information on any perpetrators who are still alive and any crimes in the complex that are not yet time-barred. "So far, neither a specific crime nor a specific perpetrator has been identified," the spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office told the German Press Agency.

However, the investigations have not yet been completed and are being conducted in various directions. According to the spokesperson, extensive documents have been evaluated and several witnesses have been heard. In July, the public prosecutor's office opened an investigation against unknown persons on the initial suspicion of sexual abuse of young people.

The former priest Dillinger from Friedrichsthal in Saarland is suspected of having sexually abused young people in particular for decades from the 1970s onwards and of having photographed them in sometimes pornographic poses. The priest's nephew found dozens of unframed slides in his house after the man's death - and went public with them in April.

Since this spring, the Dillinger case has been investigated by judicial experts in a separate project of the independent investigation commission in the diocese of Trier. This Wednesday (2.30 pm), they will present their second interim report in Trier.

The case also made headlines in the summer because a large part of the evidence from the estate of the former priest was destroyed by order of the public prosecutor's office and is therefore no longer available to the commission. At the beginning of July, the authorities had the seized material incinerated after initially seeing no basis for investigating possible accomplices who were still alive. There are no investigations into the dead.
