Current Style or Fashion - Introducing Lambrusco Spritz, the latest summer beverage.

In the Northern Italian region, the locals know how to party: They indulge in Lambrusco. Not the overly-sweet version that gained notoriety during the '70s and '80s as a headache-inducing drink. Emilia-Romagna is home to the rich, deep red, and bubbly Lambrusco. It's characteristically vibrant in color, almost violet, and has evolved from its previous sweetness to a more fruity and dry composition. This refreshing wine has become the go-to beverage in the area during outdoor gatherings.

Lambrusco, a wine from the Lambrusco grape family, is produced in several ways. The Vitis database records 18 unique Lambrusco grape types, like Lambrusco Salamini and Lambrusco Maestri. This sparkling red is primarily created across Modena, Parma, and Reggio Emilia. To be classified as genuine Lambrusco, it must be made from a single variety of grape. The process includes fermenting the wine as still and then incorporating yeast to induce fermentation and carbonation. These wines also contain a significant amount of residual sugar, up to 40-50 grams per liter. Consequently, they're exported in huge amounts.

Lambrusco tastes equally impressive as a stand-alone drink and spritzed. A timely reminder: An open bottle of Lambrusco should be refrigerated and sealed to preserve the carbon dioxide. Italians sip this beverage with meals rather than as an aperitif. The wine's freshness complements hearty Parmaschinken and Parmigiano Reggiano from Emilia-Romagna perfectly.
