- Internet hype over potato clip is bugging the national player
Football national player Florian Wirtz is visibly annoyed by the internet hype surrounding his ranking of potato dishes. "I don't find it entertaining," said the 21-year-old offensive player from German champions Bayer Leverkusen. "Especially the people who know me, and I, we don't understand why it blew up like that."
Wirtz was supposed to rank potato dishes according to his personal preference in a TikTok clip by the German Football Association. After brief consideration, he declared: "Normal potatoes... I'd even say, number one." The video became a viral hit and was even featured in party songs by singers Julian Benz and Julian Sommer.
"I think people found it funny how I said it. But it's not a big deal, I stand by it and I still like potatoes," said Wirtz.
Even during training camp in Donaueschingen, the young star had to hear his "potato" remark from many young fans. "I don't regret it. But if I'm constantly being shouted at from left and right, I try to ignore it. Because eventually, it's not funny anymore," said Wirtz.
While celebrating his team's victory in the German Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz was surprised to hear cheers for his favorite potato dish during the Champions League anthem.
Despite the ongoing buzz, Wirtz expressed his excitement about watching his favorite German Bundesliga team play their upcoming match.
