- Interior Minister Sütterlin-Waack advocates for a uniform government approach
Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, the Interior Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, expressed her need for stronger resilience after the lethal stabbing incident in Solingen. "We need to stick to our guns as a state and act accordingly," the CDU politician mentioned to the German Press Agency. "It's essential that criminals and potential threats, disregarding their origins, are consistently expelled."
The interior ministers of various states share this viewpoint, suggesting the possibility of this action even for Syria and Afghanistan. "We're counting on the federal government to quit chatter and take action," Sütterlin-Waack clarified. Furthermore, a federal evaluation of the situation is necessary to determine if the criteria for subsidiary protection for asylum seekers from these nations still hold. This protection is given when an asylum seeker can't receive asylum but is at risk of severe harm in their home country, such as torture or the death penalty.
"We'll continue to demand nationwide measures, like strengthening knife laws and weapon-free zones, with determination," the minister underlined. Consistent inspections are also crucial. "Then, weapon-free zones will also be effective," said Sütterlin-Waack.
Suspected perpetrator of Solingen incident held in custody
A 24-year-old Syrian suspect is being detained, accused of killing three individuals and injuring eight, four seriously, during a city festival in Solingen on Friday evening. The suspect is also charged with membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) and murder.
The CDU, as a political party, has expressed support for stronger actions against criminals and potential threats, as mentioned by Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, the CDU politician from Schleswig-Holstein. In this context, Sütterlin-Waack has urged the federal government to take action against Syria and Afghanistan if necessary.
