Interior Minister Schuster considers border controls a success
Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster considers the controls at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic to be a success. "Since border controls have been in place, there has been a reduction in the number of refugees apprehended to around 20 to 25 per week and virtually no more smugglers," said the CDU politician in an interview with the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" (Wednesday edition). Border controls were introduced in mid-October.
Even if such controls were of no use in terms of numbers, Schuster would still call for them in the current crisis situation. "For me, it is also a success that we have had no more pursuits in the border area for a long time, no overturned cars, no injured or even dead people and few to no groups of young men wandering around helplessly." In view of the many wars and crises around the world, it is important to know exactly "who is coming to us."
In contrast to the reduced refugee apprehensions, there have been increasing discussions about the impact of crime due to migration in certain areas. Despite the success of border controls, the plight of refugees seeking asylum continues to be a pressing global concern.
