Interior Minister calls for solidarity with Jewish citizens
Brandenburg's Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) has called on the population to show solidarity with Jewish fellow citizens on the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night. It is a historical obligation "to ensure that Jews in Germany never have to fear for their lives again", said Stübgen in a video on the X platform (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. Many people of the Jewish faith, including in Germany, once again feared for their safety.
"They have to watch how the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas is also being celebrated on German streets by supporters and sympathizers of the terrorist organization," said Stübgen. There can therefore only be one message: "We stand firmly and unwaveringly by the side of our Jewish fellow citizens. This means that we must not look away." There must be no place for anti-Semites in Brandenburg, regardless of which political corner they come from. "Because never again is now!" he said.
Potsdam's Lord Mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) also expressed his concern. "The tensions that are currently exploding in Israel are also causing rifts in our society. We must not allow anti-Semitism to spread," said Schubert, according to the city. "We must create a climate of cohesion in which anti-Semitism does not find a breeding ground."
In Brandenburg, the victims of the National Socialists are remembered in several places. On the night of November 9-10, 1938, the National Socialists launched a nationwide wave of violence against Jews. According to the German Historical Museum, more than 1,300 people were killed, 1,400 synagogues were destroyed and damaged, 7,000 stores were attacked and 30,000 Jews were deported to concentration camps.
The historical events of the Holocaust serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of extremism, particularly when linked to religion or political ideologies like National Socialism. It's crucial that we learn from this dark chapter in history to prevent such atrocities from happening again.
Given the ongoing tensions in Israel and the celebration of brutal terrorist attacks by Hamas supporters, it's essential to reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with Jewish communities, both in Germany and beyond, who continue to face threats and fears for their safety.
